The Ugly Side of Dog Breeding

4LINK to Today Show

James Serpell on the Today Show this morning. He does an excellent job.

Love the line "institutionalized animal cruelty."

Notice that the AKC would not appear; they will not even try to defend the indefensible.

Yet the AKC continues to salute contrived standards, inbreeding, and even incestuous matings. No wonder they have seen a 55% decline in registrations in the last 15 years!

I just think its unfortunate that they don't air this program on one of the network channels or at least on basic cable- I know I don't get BBC America, I don't think anyone I know gets that channel either...

What I loved was the AKC's universal, canned response that NBC flashed on the screen: "We advocate balanced breeding programs, genetic testing, blah blah blah" (emphasis mine). They do not REQUIRE them. As if that's the only issue *rolleyes*

I'm so interested to see how this turns out with them! Someone needs to do a full-length America (AKC) version, even though it'll be very similar to this one...oh but then the AKC will not grant interviews because they'll have so much sand up the hoo-hah over the issue that they won't be able to talk. If that is highlighted along with the AKC/puppy mill issue and if such a program is shown on prime-time broadcast TV, they could very well go under. And honestly, who would be opposed to that?

Word verification is "Lizes"...which is precisely what the AKC spreads in attempts to gain favor and maintain their high horse amongst "the fancy" who pride themselves in "the sport." YECH.

I'm not holding anything back today, can you tell? :p
