So Much Art Is Shit

"Artist's Shit" is a 1961 artwork by the Italian "artist" Piero Manzoni. The work consists of 90 tin cans, each reportedly filled with 30 grams of Manzoni's faeces.

Surely no one is buying this... shit?

You would be wrong. A tin was sold for €124,000 at Sotheby's on May 23, 2007; in October 2008 tin #83 was sold at Sotheby's for £97,250. On October 16, 2015, tin #54 was sold at Christies for £182,500. In August 2016, at an art auction in Milan, one of the tins sold for €275,000, including auction fees.

Which gets us to a core reality: So much "modern art" is just a scam; it's not pretty, smart, uplifting or even thought-provoking beyond the obvious, which is that so much art is a scam.

I have a bachelor's degree in painting and printmaking. It is frustrating what is considered to be "art" nowadays. Modern art is indeed a big, fat, stupid scam. It's just a game for the rich.
