Coffee and Provocation

  • Fiddling While America Burns
You want to see a picture the GOP really does not want you to see? It's a picture of job loss in the current recession (created by the failed polices of George Bush) as compared to previous recessions. Check it out!
Any doubt now that we are in serious trouble? And what is the GOP doing about it? Nothing but blocking all attempts to set things right.

  • You Eating That?
Paleontologists at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, have discovered the oldest human hair ever -- in fossilized hyena waste in a cave. The human hair is dated 195,000 to 257,000 years ago, and predates the earliest known sample of human hair by 200,000 years. >> To read more

  • The Chinese are Thrilled!
A recent Gallup poll fins "only 39% of Americans say they ‘believe in the theory of evolution,’ while a quarter say they do not believe in the theory, and another 36% don’t have an opinion either way.” >> To read more

  • Among the Best for Less
The Trout Underground Fly Fishing Blog by Tom Chandler has the temerity (and good judgement) to list the Eagle Claw Trailmaster 7.5′ Pack Rod as among the best. I love this rod, and the snobs who don't can stick it because this one actually makes the trip. 'Nuff said!

  • A Musical Triumph in Construction
The "Beatles Complete on Ukulele" is a new blog with great promise. And these guys are serious. So serious, in fact, that they did a fundraiser for Warren Buffet (yes, yes, they are those kinds of guys) and brought him "literally hundreds of dollars" and got one of the greatest ukulele interviews of all time. Check it out! "If you build it, they will come."

  • Missing Darwin Art Found
Mark Churchill has pointed out another one of my many failings. In my visual litany on the evolution of Darwin evolution cartoons, I missed the Northwoods t-shirt that depicts man evolving to a falconer with a peregrine on his fist.
Still missing -- the cartoon showing him with terrier at his heel, and a shovel over his shoulder!

  • Say My Name!
A cow with a name produces more milk than a cow without. Apparently this is true, though I would point out that it may also make it harder to turn into a hamburger later on. A possible compromise: Name all the cows after hamburgers. Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Whopper, etc.

I love that Larson cartoon.

When Dash was lost in the conservation area once he was found by some people down the road.

Not uncharacteristically, he nipped them.

I sent them a thank-you note (and some movie passes as hush money) using that card. It was perfect!
