tentatively: The beatles seems to have taken a photo with an afghan hound in 1965, and a book people still look for "This Is The Afghan Hound - Joan McDonald Brearley" came out, and probably a progressive media wave after that, kinda like whatever feeds the terrible overuse of pugs and english bulldogs were seeing mediawise now.
