Wool Not Worth the Price of Transport
Considering the environmental cost of sheep, and the declining demand for mutton, it's time for UK and US sheep operations to embrace a new economic model.
However, the price per lb for lamb at east coast livestock auctions is currently higher than that for cattle and lamb is typically finished on pasture not in feed lots with expensive feeds. One just needs to choose a hair breed to avoid the expense of sheering.
