Stubby, war hero dog of the Army's 102nd Regiment, makes his debut as mascot of Georgetown University's football team on Oct. 1, 1921.
The dog was owned by James Conroy, a Georgetown Law student, and he endures as a symbol of the Hoyas, though he is much changed in the current logo.
Below, we see Stubby receiving a gold medal from Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing for the dog's s heroism in WWI. The award, from the Humane Education Society, recognized the Boston Bull Terrier mix's 18-month service in the trenches.
Stubby was credited with saving many a man by barking warnings of mustard gas, and dragging wounded doughboys out of No Man's Land. He survived injuries from gas and a German grenade, and the women of Chateau-Thierry, France, sewed him a coat on which his medals were worn.
