What Works to Save Wildlife

In Banff National Park, there are 44 wildlife crossing structures (6 overpasses and 38 underpasses) that help wildlife safely cross the busy Trans-Canada Highway. These wildlife crossing have reduced collisions with large animals like bears, elk and cougars by 80%!

I remember when these were planned and many people in the U.S. thought they were nuts. It takes a while for animal populations to adapt their movements/migrations to these structures and it's great to hear they're working so well. A healthy ecosystem is just as good for the humans who live there. Also, not colliding with a moose on a highway is great for human survival.
