Groundhogs are very hard to pull from hard pipes (they brace with their feet and inflate their bodies), and this small groundhog was ensconced in a very small and very hard clay den pipe, which made it doubly surprising when Moxie began to pull it into daylight.
All was revealed when I got a snare around a front leg (Moxie had grabbed the groundhog by the cheek) and pulled it free. It turns out a back leg had been amputed at the "knee" some time earlier, and had healed over. The work of a coyote, fox, or dog, I imagine, as the farm owner says she allows no trapping.
