Be Careful Where You Dig

This area is in the middle of several dozen Civil War battlefields (Antietam, Monocacy, South Mountain, Gettysburg) and the wider area includes Bull Run, Hancock, Boonsboro, Williamsport, Shepherdstown, Wilderness, Manassas, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Malvern Hill, Appomattox Courthouse, New Market, Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.

Several times a year, someone digs up an old and still potentially-active Civil War cannonball, and the bomb squad has to be called to make sure people don't blow themselves up.  The latest:
A team of bomb technicians from the Office of the State Fire Marshal safely disposed of a Civil War-era ordnance Monday evening after it was discovered by a Frederick County homeowner.

A homeowner on Glen Hill Court in Jefferson contacted the fire marshal’s office after another family said the cannonball was live. The family gave it to the homeowner after finding it near the Monocacy Battlefield.

Bomb technicians determined the fusing mechanism inside the cannonball was still intact.
