Have We Reached Peak Coal Use?

Although global coal reserves remain abundant, consumption of coal has declined in many countries, and with the rise of efficient solar cells, the world may soon reach global peak coal use.

As of 2015, China accounted for 50.0 percent of world coal consumption, but Chinese coal consumption fell in 2014 and 2015 and China like the US, is looking to improve efficiency and build solar and other renewable facilities.

China, like the US and most of Europe, understands that coal is the past

India’s coal consumption continues to rise, but investments in coal may soon make less sense as price for solar falls, and efficiency rises.

One factor likely to speed the pace of coal’s decline is the fact that high quality coal (as determined by energy per ton) is harder to find and lower-quality control, while abundant, produces less energy and more pollution.

Another issue is that foreign aid to build coal-fired plants in the developing world is drying up just as solar becomes more affordable and efficient.
