America was settled to escape Christmas paganism. The first major group of folks to come to the US to settle were called Puritans and they rejected birthdays, Christmas trees, garlands, etc.
The reason George Washington crossed the Delaware to attack Trenton on Christmas Day was because "real Americans" did not celebrate Christmas, but the German Hessian mercenaries hired by the British did.
Christmas, as we know it today, was dragged into the English-speaking world in 1848 by Queen Victoria whose husband, Prince Albert, was German, where paganism flourishes with a barely-Christian overlay.
