That means it’s time to make sure the dogs are warm and dry and able to get out of the wind in even in the worst weather.
Thick plywood walls topped by an asphalt shingle roof, rigid foam insulation all the way around, spray foam to seal cracks, scrap rug on the bottom and over the door, and deep straw inside, will generally do the trick.
Elevate the house to keep it dry, preferably with an extra layer of insulation on the bottom.
In cold weather, an open barrel will NOT keep your dog warm or dry, nor will most of the commercial plastic and wood dog houses that come with huge door openings and no insulation.
