Watched a Calf Born at the Maryland State Fair

A calf was born to a large audience at the Maryland State Fair. It was a very smooth birth, with the calf breathing right away, and the mother standing up right after the birth with the last of the plancenta still dangling out her backside.

The goods news is this calf was female, so she'll have seven or eight years as a well-cared for milk cow before going off to the knackers when her milk production falls. Milk cows become hamburger.

Boy calfs are sold off, raised for a while as veal, and then slaughtered young.  Milk production and veal production are intertwined.
