D-Day Dogs

Dogs went with the paratroopers and the boats on D-Day-1 and D-Day.

How do you train a dog to jump out of an an airplane?

The dogs were fitted into harnesses and the dogs used the same parachutes that had been designed to carry bicycles.

In order to get the dogs to jump out of airplanes, they weren't given anything to drink or eat beforehand. The men who jumped with the dogs (separate parachutes) carried with them meat and water, and the very hungry dogs were allowed to gorge on landing.

Jump, land, eat: basic conditioning. With each training jump, the dogs learned that the airplane rides were prelude to much desired food.

The dogs were mostly used to find mines and booby traps. Not a lot made it back.
