Controlling Mesopredator Release

This is a National Audubon Society guide for private land owners on how to manage meso-predators, such as red fox, raccoon, skunk, and mink, which can decimate wild bird populations, especially ducks, geese, and ground nesting shore birds.

Mesopredator release is what happens when apex predators, such as wolves and mountain lions, are removed from an ecosystem, and the population of smaller mesopredators, such as red fox, raccoon, skunk, and mink, explode to unnaturally high numbers as a result.
