This is the on the front page of The Washington Post this morning, where the Humane Society of the US is headquartered.
- The Humane Society of the United States is a massive direct mail mill that was charged with organized crime (RICO) violations and paid a multi-multi million dollar settlement.
- All of the money that new donors give to HSUS goes to finance more direct mail; direct mail only turns a "profit" on renewal or upon response to the third or fourth "special appeal." Donate once, and you will be dunned forever.
- HSUS keeps about $20 million in accounts in the Cayman Islands and pays CEO Wayne Pacelle over $380,000 a year -- money that mostly comes from senior citizens on fixed incomes.
- Almost no HSUS money actually goes to help dogs and cats in local shelters.
From The Washington Post story comes this detail from an investigative memo:
“On one such work trip in 2006, she told investigators Pacelle asked her to stop by his hotel room after an event. He asked if he could masturbate in front of her, requested that she take off her clothes and offered to perform oral sex on her, according to two people briefed on the matter and the memo. When the woman refused, Pacelle told her not to tell anyone or she would destroy the Humane Society and lose her job, according to the memo.”
Several settlements were made with donor dollars.
More to be revealed, no doubt.
