Thank You Jack and Laura Dangermond!
A beautiful tract of undeveloped California coastal land totaling more than 24,000 acres, or about 38 square miles, has been purchased by The Nature Conservancy for permanent preservation, thanks to a $165 million donation by Jack and Laura Dangermond, a wealthy tech-industry couple who founded and still run the Esri mapping company. This incredible tract of land includes hills and canyons, grasslands and brush, 2,000 acres of coastal live-oak stands containing perhaps 1 million trees, a creek, parts of the Santa Ynez mountain range, and a full eight miles of the bluffs and beaches around Point Conception, west of Santa Barbara. The Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve is the kind of gift that makes America great now and forever. My father would have very much approved.
Mail Order Dog Food?
I have always gotten dog food from the local grocery store, but it seems I have been paying too much. 46 pounds of Purina Dog Chow for $18.69 including shipping is a very good deal!
Made in Virginia
The first beer can was sold in Richmond, Virginia in 1935.
The High Cost of a Free Dog
I sometimes get emails from folks who are concerned about the rapidly rising cost of pedigree dogs. $1,500 for a Border Terrier? And yet the upfront cost of a dog is the least of it. A new Harris Poll conducted by telephone for the American Institute of CPAs found that while more than half of Americans have less than $1,000 in their savings, American pet owners spend $1,560 per year on their pet’s routine care (feeding, grooming, boarding, scheduled visits to the vet), based on an average monthly cost of $130. Nearly a quarter of pet owners (23 percent) admitted the cost of pet ownership is more than they expected.
A Rapid Decline in Hunters
While a new report shows that 101.6 million Americans -- 40 percent of the adult population -- participated in hunting, fishing & wildlife activities, hunting is bringing up the rear in that line up. While wildlife-watching surged 20 percent from 2011 to 2016, from 71.8 million to 86 million, and fishing increased 8 percent from 33.1 million anglers in 2011 to 35.8 million in 2016, hunting dropped by over 15 percent from 13.5 million to 11.5 million. Total expenditures by hunters declined 29 percent, from $36.3 billion to $25.6 billion during the same period of time.
Coffee for End Times?
Doomsday preppers say coffee is the key to surviving the end of the world. I would suggest antibiotics, tarps, parachute cord, and fish hooks, but what do I know?
If You Can See It, a Bullet Can Probably Hit It
A bullet can travel between 1.1 and 3.2 miles. If you don't know this, please do not own a gun.
No More Fake Service Animals in Michigan?
A bill pending in the Michigan Senate would make it a misdemeanor to misrepresent an animal as an emotional support animal.
Charles Darwin Christmas Ornament
I've ordered two, so the kids can each get one when I die.

Re: Michigan/emotional support animals:
I've never used this gambit to bring my dog where animals aren't welcomed ( because: A) I lack the cajones, B) my dog is way too undisciplined to masquerade as a "service" animal, and C) I don't like the idea of citing ordinances to bully people into submission) but NYC is rife with pet owners who do.
While genuine 'service dogs' are trained to perform real tasks (such as guide dogs), the concept of an 'emotional support animal' is justifiably prone to abuse because the idea is pseudo-scientific & nebulous to begin with.
I can't get too exercised by the idea of people abusing a law where compliance requires only a signed note from a quack.
