The orange and white mushrooms here are powerful hallucinogens -- and also the type most commonly used to illustrate children's books.
Water and temperature are the trigger for mushroom growth, most of which "bloom" in Spring or Fall before collapsing back into their underground mycelium "foliage" for the rest of the year.

The backstory to Santa Claus, including the red robes, seems to relate back to these as well, along with the flying reindeer (reindeer seem to like to ingest these, too).
