“If, when we were young, we tramped through forests of Nebraska Cottonwoods, or raised pigeons on a rooftop in Queens, or fished for Ozark bluegills, or felt the swell of a wave that travelled a thousand miles before lifting our boat, then we were bound to the natural world and remain so today”. - Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods

Thanks for this. I raised pigeons as a kid, and I still love them. And I also agree about the business of keeping kids under surveillance, and living scripted life every minute of the day. It saps a kids initiative, creativity and resourcefulness.
I think pigeons are the pet of choice in the city - they're already there, no thanks to the people who have done no research and imagine them to be flying disease-bombs. And they can be so rewarding. You can teach them all sorts of things, and like the guy says, you have to work hard to earn their trust, which makes it all the more rewarding when they display their trust in you.
