Is the New Wolf the Same as the Old Wolf?

It's claimed that the "coywolf" -- a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf --  is a "remarkable new hybrid carnivore" that is taking over territories once roamed by wolves and "slipping unnoticed into our cities."

The only problem is that the "red wolf" -- the original "wolf" of the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., may also be a stable hybrid between an eastern wolf and coyote.

Is the "new wolf" simply the old wolf, albeit one with a slightly different mix of genes?

We have animals the same size here in my neighborhood. We call them "big-ass coyotes."
