Austin and Lucy Rollerblading

I do not roller-blade (yet), but Austin is a great roller-skater and was a star roller-hockey player in Junior High. He has control here, don't kid yourself.

I was on a bike with a point-and-shoot camera in one hand while I steered. Brakes? Not so much.

Lucy and Austin can do four or five miles like this, with Lucy pulling in harness, and Austin more-or-less hanging on for the ride.

Lucy loves it!   This is the Huckleberry Trail in Blacksburg, Virginia -- a great trail for roller-blading with a dog.

As I have noted in the past, one of the main problems with Pit Bulls is that most owners are not willing to take the time and energy necessary to give these active dogs the excercise and road miles they need.  The result is a puppy that grows up to be a tough, under-trained and under-excercised teenager that eats the couch and kills the neighbor's cat.  And what happens next?  Another Pit Bull joins the 400,000,000 pounds of dead Pit Bulls we kill and throw into landfills and cremation ovens every year.

Get him a helmet.

Yep! Point made to him -- and wrist guards too. I told him I would buy. At his age he still thinks he's invincible, but at my age I know better. A "brain bucket" is more than a good thing at the speeds he travels -- it's a requirement.

Very cool. I do similar urban mushing with my boxers on a bicycle and would highly recommend these for a much smoother ride.

Notice that at the end of Austin's leash he has an attached muzzle. Muzzles are TOOLS and like any tool they have their place, especially with a young Pit Bull. Nothing shows ignorance about dogs more than a horror about muzzles; they are a terrific way for a slightly bossy dog to learn how to play well with others. Take away the teeth and the bossy dog acts quite a bit differently, and yes that behavior does transfer and become a habit and a new knowledge about polite behavior when the muzzle is off.

I used to rollerblade with a couple of my whippets. Helmet and pads are definitely helpful. BTW Downhill run, bunnies, 4 foot dropoff and whippets is not a recipe for success. I was not a hockey player, heck, I could barely stay on skates, but we used to do 15-20 miles a week.
