What We Have Done to Some Dogs

NO NOSE.

If breeders intentionally bred two-legged dogs, would we not consider that a crime? Would it not be illegal? Would we not at least shun the people that set out to intentionally bring this kind of pain and suffering into the world?

Then why is this not only legal, but celebrated?

And why are the veterinarians silent?

Why are the dog trainers silent?

Why are the dog magazines silent?

they get on you for tail docking or ear cropping, but this - dogs that can't breath - is just fine... What a world!

I assure you I am not silent!!!!!!! I have frequently written on the exam sheets of brachycephalic dogs "SEVERE AIRWYS INADEQUACY SHOULD NEVER BE BRED" but he breeders do what they will. These dogs SUFFER their whole lives in many cases. The worst part is it IS possible to breed dogs that have the baby faced look that is so appealing (aptly so??) to our infantilised 21 century culture with a enough muzzle that the dogs can breath, play and function; just look at many of the boostons out there. I try all the time to explain to people that they will have a much happier dog owning experience if they follow two rules: 1) The canine genome can support about one order of magnitude in size and thats it stick between 10 and 100 pounds adult weight and you will avoid many pittfalls (from puppy hypoglycemia to osteosarcoma)2) Dogs NEED an airway so avoid profoundly brachycephalic breeds like the plauge!!!!!!!!!!! I could tell horror stories of how easily these dogs get into crisis all day. Still English Bulldog puppies are selling for more than hunt test titled birddogs or field trial winning hounds, it disgusts me.

The people who breed these extreme brachys are blind to the conformation problems.

The people who fall for these baby faced creatures are blind to the problems and see the abnormal as normal for the breed.

The dogs themselves have no choice and put up with continuous snoring and over heating.

There is NO animal welfare act in the world that prevents these poor dogs being produced, yet many acts contain statements that SHOULD make it a crime to produce such dogs.

If only because it goes against the whole ideal of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Free to do as we want, who cares about the results as long as we end up on the winning end.

But not for the dogs.

Psychotherapy, indeed. And that's without even expounding on how people substitute things like food for love, leading to a whole new set of issues.

I've had this breed 20 years mostly rescues and honestly have not had a problem with their breathing , loads of other problems But Not Breathing. I have a youngster here who will walk and play fetch all day and with a ball stuffed in his mouth too.

Our boston terrier does choke and gasp after a good run, her nose is a bit longer but much more padded , I would not have another. Most of my cavaliers couldnt walk far either without making the most awful gasping noises

I am not in denial if there was an issue with their breathing I would admit it( i'll admit everything else thats wrong with them quite happily )but you are judging purely on looks not on facts
