Yard-work Ahead

Six cubic yards of screened top soil were delivered this afternoon, to be moved this weekend. It’s tarped now to keep it dry.

Tomorrow I split the Stella D’Oro Daylily bed and start to move the overage into the wetter part of the orchard.

The crowns of the daylilies will sit high (and mostly dry) on dirt mounds, with a thick layer of leaf litter between the long dirt mounds, and with wood chips on top. The daylilies will have “wet feet” if they need it in the driest parts of a summer drought, but the dry crowns should keep rot at bay.

A similar set-up should help the bee balms and rudbeckia prosper as well.
