Dr Salk was still at NIH in the 80's. My family was affected by polio twice before the vaccine. My aunt died when she was 4 years old from Polio. Then in the late 50's, my father contracted polio in Maryland. I mentioned it to an epidemiologist and she said that there was breakout of polio in the Pennsylvania Amish community during that time. An area where my parents would frequently visit. Likely where he caught it. He was quaranteend from us for weeks. I was very young, but remember my father having a 'malaria outbreak' and was in the hospital. Later he told me it was polio.
