On This Day in 1492

On this day, in 1492, Columbus set sail for the "Indies”, with disastrous consequences for the millions of people who already lived there.

What followed was a plague of a dozen diseases, mass murder, systemstic rape and infanticide, and wholesale theft of land, timber, and minerals.

And the dog connection?

Columbus brought the first European dogs to the New World -- Alaunts used to terrorize, kill, and feed on the native people.

Columbus enslaved people, and when they tried to escape, he sent attack dogs to hunt them down. The dogs would tear off the arms and legs of the screaming natives while they were still alive, and if the Spaniards ran short of meat to feed the dogs, Arawak babies were killed for dog food.
