Feeding the Welfare Wild
Black-oil sunflower seeds for the birds, cracked corn for the deer.
Why is feed corn cracked? Because cracking corn (ie "processing it") releases the carbohydrates and nutrients that might otherwise be trapped inside the kernel.
Patrick, Feed whole corn to deer! I'd say corn is cracked so young chickens and very small mammals can eat it. It's an old belief among serious poultrymen that cracking corn, however, kills the germ, or at least leads to staleness and deteriorating feed value. Certainly I found that putting out cracked corn for crows rapidly deteriorated in the weather--heat and rain--compared to whole corn.
