Where Is This?

I have come across this picture several times.

The first dozen times, it was captioned as a North American wolf-dog with native people, and I may have reposted it with that description myself.

Then someone said it was Siberian.

Really?  Could be.  What do I know? The picture is *awfully* grainy.

It turns out the *real* answer is even more interesting.

This picture is from Manchuria and is attributed to Waldemar Jochelson on the Jesup North Pacific Expedition of  1897–1902 and printed (Illustration 45) by Ivar Lissner, a German journalist, author, and Nazi spy, in his book on the lives of the “Reindeer People”.  In fact, the picture was most likely taken by Dina Brodsky (aka Jochelson-Brodskaya), the wife of Waldemar Jochelson who was also on the Expedition.

See >> https://www.donsmaps.com/reindeerpeople.html for more on Lissner’s fascinating book, which can be read online here >> https://archive.org/details/mangodmagic00liss/page/334/mode/1up

For more on Lissner, who is pretty interesting himself, see >> https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivar_Lissner

I would thank a reader for the added information that the picture was taken by Jochelson (which was buried in the end notes to Lissner’s book), but she was such a flaming asshole about it that I just banned her rather than thank her, as I normally do.

Civility is not a lesser value, and my tolerance for pricks and cunts is low.
