This baby Barred Owl was caught peaking out of a cleft hole in a tree down by the river.
The adults are serious predators of (mostly) mice and voles.
The new house that I moved into 6 weeks ago is surrounded by a daily cacophony of Barred Owl sounds, but the only nest that I know of (so far) is the very occupied owl box in the backyard of my closest neighbor. Most of the owl sounds I hear, however, are coming from the forested creek bottom behind the house, which is in the opposite direction.
Barred Owls are very territorial, are year-round residents, and tend to use the same nest holes from year to year.
