A Thing With Possibilities

The new house has a very large woods attached to it, and there’s an old wooden free-standing deer stand in those woods, not too far from the house.

The deer stand, and the presence of numerous hawks, got me wondering whether a “hawk feeder” might be a thing.

All of that to say that a few minutes of googling turned up the “Luck Duck ‘Lil Critter Decoy” ($19.95) which looks to be an interesting thing on several levels.

Basically, it’s a bit of fur (or feather) that moves about in an enticing way thanks to a couple of double-A batteries and an intermittent actuator.

This thing is mostly used by fox and coyote shooters.  But could it be used to lure hawks to a camera trap in a deer stand?  Could it be used as a “fascinator” to get fox to hold still for my slow camera?

This was my original brain-fart, but then it occurred to me that this thing would be pretty perfect for go-to-ground trials and for my falconry friends who trap passage birds that are later released after a season or two.

For $19.95, this might have some entertainment and photography value.

And in places where go-to-ground is illegal because of “baiting” laws (I’m talking to you, folks in the UK), this might be exactly the thing to keep “low impact” terrier work alive and well.
