The Prey Base

Eastern Cottontail. A very small rabbit with no relation to its larger European counterpart.

Bugs Bunny was a European rabbit. How do we know? He lives in a hole. With one rare regional exception, American rabbits live above ground and kindle in scrapes no deeper than an ice cream bowl.

Notice that rabbit eyes are located left and right, and cannot see as well straight ahead — a feature common to prey animals which benefit from a nearly 360 degree scope of vision. Predator eyes generally face forward so they can judge speed and distance with precision.
