Two captive-bred California condors were released in Redwood National Park on Tuesday. The birds, with 10-foot wingspans, were last spotted in the area 130 years ago.
The reintroduction project is headed by the Yurok tribe with assistance from Federal and local fish and wildlife agencies. The Yurok people traditionally considered the California condor a sacred animal and have worked for years to return the animal to the tribe’s ancestral territory.
