Greenpeace Began With C.U.N.T.?

The Cannikin Underground Nuclear Test was an underground nuclear weapons test performed on November 6, 1971, in the National Wildlife Refuge on Amchitka Island, Alaska, by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Amchitka is the largest of the Rat Islands.

The almost 5 megatons of TNT explosion was 250 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and remains the largest underground explosion ever detonated by the United States.

A ship was chartered by the “Don’t Make a Wave Committee” of the Sierra Club to protest the explosion. The ship’s name, Greenpeace, became the name of the environmental organization we know today.
