A Positive Greenhouse Gas Story


Less cattle means less greenhouse gases, right?

So perhaps someone should note that while "there was a consistent upward trend for the first 100 years shown here (1875 to 1974), over which time the total number of cattle increased from 6 million to 15.2 million. Since then, the number of cattle has fallen by almost 5 million; or 32%." Source

The same trend can be seen in the U.S. especially among dairy cow herds where far fewer milk cows produce fare more milk thanks to improved genetics alone. Improved efficiency in milk production has enabled the U.S. dairy industry to produce 218 billion pound billion pounds of milk from s 9.34 million million cows in 2019 as compared to only 117 billion pounds of milk from 25.6 million cows in 1944.
