Rubber Bullets and Pepper Balls at the White House

Rubber bullets and pepper balls

A catered riot?

I went to DC today and biked to the White House from Dupont Circle.

Observations:
  1. The City is fine with no obvious disfunction or mayhem. Traffic was light, as it has been with Covid.
  2. The destruction I saw was limited to graffiti and some smashed windows. The AFL-CIO had broken glass and graffiti — the latter being power-washed off, and the former boarded up. Places without broken windows were boarding up today — folks expect more.
  3. At Lafayette Park in front of White House, the entire park is cordoned off. Four fences are now between protesters and the White House — 3 of them erected for these protests. The park looked fine. ATF agents observed.
  4. At 11:00 am, far more camera people than protesters. A lot of zooming in on graffiti and on a small park maintenance building or public bathroom — the size of a school bus — that had been heavily tagged with graffiti and burned inside. No real damage that paint and a power-washing could not cure, however. Ditto for some building sides that were down the street. The media is very clearly hyping very little damage.
  5. More press cameras than protesters by a wide margin which was comical to me. Two pairs of kids with signs posing for tourist picrtures. All very underwhelming.
  6. Took pictures of a rubber bullet and a pepper round.
  7. Saint John's Church looked completely unmarked or hit. Last night they made it sound like it was burning to the ground. Clearly not true.  Apparently a very small fire was set in a basement playroom for kids, and it was quickly extinguished.
  8. An old Peggy Lee song played through my headIs this all there is to a riot?
