When the Frame is Broken...

The title refers to framing.   If you don't know what framing means, I explain it here, within the context of dogs.

A classic example of framing:  I pour a glass of water and ask, Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

No matter the answer given, it's almost always wrong.

As I point out (after drinking the half-glass of water for a little drama), the essential nature of a glass is that it can be refilled.

Whether a glass is half-empty or half-full is irrelevant.

By directing the question to a binary answer, however, I have forced folks to embrace a suggested intellectual frame which tends to squeeze out alternative ways of thinking .

It's an intellectual trap, and a very common one.

In any debate, ask yourself what is the implied frame being used?  Should you accept that frame?  What are the alternatives?

Folks will almost always throw out facts to preserve their frame unless you substitute a better frame, and that substitution is best done right at the beginning.

Get them testing your frame, rather than defending their own.
