Already Too Big in 1900?
Writing in 1900, Hugh Dalziel notes that the fox terrier of his day was too big to go to ground — a major difference between the dog of the Reverend John Russell’s day and the “modern” dog.
Optimal size varies with geography. No foxes in NZ. Lots of possums, rabbits and rats. I wouldn't want a dog bred to fit in a rat hole, and for possums, I'd prefer an XXL JRT.
