This is the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal which goes for 185 miles from Washington DC to Cumberland, Maryland, where this bike path meets with the Great Allegheny Passage (another 150 miles) which goes to Pittsburgh.
The C&O Canal does not have water in long lengths, but it’s always next to the Potomac River, so there's lots of wildlife.
