I'm pretty sure this is a Red-tail hawk nest, as the male and female hang around this location (they were both at the top of the tree a few minutes before I took this picture), and they seem to be doing some pretty serious aerial courting.
There was a dead heifer calf at the base of the tree. As I was unloading the dogs two Animal Control trucks showed up. The female officer had seen the the dumped calf the night before, and they had come to pick it up this morning. It was just the two of them and it was 200 pounds of stinky dead weight, so I helped them lift it up and slide it into the back of one of their trucks. I thought it weird for a farmer to dump a dead calf off his own property, and strange too for Animal Control to do pick up at this remote location. Dead deer are everywhere, but apparently unless they are on the road that is not in their remit, but dead cows are. Who knew?
