Blair Braverman and her Iditarod sled dog team finished their first Iditarod on Sunday. Braverman's social media fans call themselves the #UglyDogs. During the race, they raised $7,000 funds for a remote Alaskan school in 24 hours. When that project was funded, they turned to other school projects listed at DonorsChoose.org.
A few hundred miles into the race, teachers started hugging her in villages. “We haven’t been able to buy new glue sticks in six months, but now my classroom will have a garden and a project to get girls into engineering!” one woman told her. Braverman says she “happy cried all the way up the Yukon”.
The "Igivearod" campaign she started has raised over $100,000 from over 2,500 people who are helping over 9,000 students in Alaska villages.
Blair Braverman finished the Iditarod in 36th place with a time of 13 days 19 hours 17 minutes and 2 seconds. And did I mention she's the first Jewish woman to finish the Iditarod? Yeah, that too.
