It sounds like a sick joke, but after months of public meetings and consultations, a report by cabinet ministers in Botswana has recommended lifting a four-year hunting ban and the introduction of elephant culling and the "establishment of elephant meat canning" for pet food.
The number of elephants in Botswana has risen to 130,000, which appears to be a population overshoot. Botswana has more elephants than any other country in Africa.
In other African elephant news, the Chinese "Queen of Ivory" has been sentenced to 15 years in Tanzania, while poaching for ivory has sparked evolution and the rise of tuskless elephants.

great elephant info. shocked and saddened by the canned elephant for dogs though. inconceivable how they thought that up, what with all of the other non-endangered animals they could be using, like rats...
