A Thrill Killer Song Bird

Shrikes are called “butcherbirds” due to their habit of killing small mice, lizards, and small birds in order to feed on their flesh, which they impale on thorns before tearing into them.

Shrikes, a type of passerine or song bird, kill even when they’re not hungry, and will imitate the songs of other birds in order to lure them in.

Maryland has two types of shrikes -- the Northern Shrike and the Loggerhead Shrike
