Instruction for a Get Rich Quick Plan: Buy a ton of birds, slap a label on them that says "Cage Free, Steroid Free, Hormone Free" and sell them at two to three times the price to the rubes in New York City.
The joker in the deck: There is no "meat chicken" that is anything but free range, and no chickens of any kind are ever given steroids or hormones either.
I always encourage people to learn about farms, as it’s rather non-alarming, for the most part. We have more food, better food, cleaner food, less contaminated food, and know more about our food than at any time in history.
What we want is more STORY with our food. So people give us story and we pay a lot for that.
That’s true for food, dogs, dog food, and quite a lot more. But if you are paying a lot of money for stories that are lies, you are being ripped off.

your statement: " There is no "meat chicken" that is anything but free range" is just plain wrong. all commercial chickens are not pastured, or outdoors. they are all raised in a giant cage--about 1 sq foot per bird. they don't see the sun, or have any fresh food. they are fed highly chemically sprayed corn and soy feed.

contrast this with an organic, (does not allow herbicides or chemical pesticides in any part of production), truly free range pastured chicken, like the ones we have, or the ones at the large commercial organic pastured chicken farm down the street from us: always outside, go into a large open air but wire covered pen at night to roost away from predators, fed unsprayed, chemical-free feeds that are barely touched, since these are foraging breeds that mostly prefer fresh foods and insects to prepared feeds. consequently their meat and eggs (if layers), have a higher Omega 3:Omega 6 fatty acid ratio, and the meat is far tastier IMHO.

also, those artificially fat, weird textured drumsticks at the Costco or Safeway store? not in a pastured bird. smaller, but more succulent. it's true.
