God Bless Willis Carrier

Its hotter that the Congo outside, and so let us take a minute to give thanks to Willis Carrier, who invented air conditioning and is therefore responsible for about half of all settlement in the tropical world and the American West.

I raise a glass to him every time my unit kicks on and keeps the place at a balmy 77F, which is still COLD compared to the oppressive sludge through which one must swim anytime one is outside airing dogs or running errands. Only lamentation is that we haven't really improved on the overall efficiency of the process aside from alternative energy sources that aren't available to a majority of the population. It's expensive to live comfortably, and I dearly miss the crisp (and financially comfortable with the lower cost of natural gas) 61F at which I can keep the place in the winter.

When the weather is like this we give thanks for our 4 window units; this occurs about 1-2 weeks a year. The rest of the time our house stays comfortable because in the 1800s (before Mr Carrier's invention) people built houses to vent the heat and take advantage of prevailing breezes.
