Female Eastern Hercules Beetle


Marley, the Italian Greyhound, started worrying at a piece of Sahara sandstone and a tropical hardwood burl that I have next to the fireplace. I thought she was hearing the birds nesting up in the chimney (they nest their every year), but my wife checked and it was (eek!) an Eastern Hercules Beetle. We found another female, in the same location, at about the same time of the year, four years ago, also female. This is the largest beetle found in the U.S.
