They don’t eat or sleep -- they go on a testosterone-fueled jag mating as long as 14 hours at a time.  The testosterone triggers a malfunction in the stress hormone shut-off switch, resulting in the immune system collapsing and all of them dropping dead before the females give birth to a single baby.

100-Year Mother, The Last Of her Kind
There are only four Yangtze giant softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) left in the world, three males and a female. The two in China have mated several times, but without progeny. It turns out the male has a damaged penis so, using a technique called electro-ejaculation, they have collected semen from the male turtle and hope for a clutch of new eggs this year. Fingers crossed!
