Today's chicken weighs more than four times its predecessor 50 years ago. This not due to antibiotics, hormones, or genetic modification, but simple selective breeding and better feed.

Excellent piece -- and the linked paper as well. In the late 80's to early 90's we used to raise broilers on a small scale (a few hundreds) and they averaged 3500g by day 56, in the always-challenging tropics. Not surprised that another 700g has been added in the following 25 years.
