The great
I am not sure how many people who saw this Conan parody piece fully understood it as a policy lance.
The automobile-specific subtext is that this industry's “made in America” pitch is not really about helping ALL Americans get a job. It’s about helping a specific Union (UAW) prop up its membership base.
Note the funny little bit at the end -– that’s a nod to the fact that UAW contracts include Mexico and Canada, and so auto work sent to those countries (thanks to UAW lobbyists) is deemed to be “made in America” for purposes of America's domestic content law.
To put a fine point on it: UAW (and most other unions) say "America" does not start and end with our borders and our people, but instead defines America as existing mainly within the four corners of a union membership card.
Absurd? Sure. And that's the point. .
