Found this sparrow trap at Luckett’s. This is 2-bay, and the middle bay is where a bait bird or live decoy is placed to attract others birds to the open compartments.
The way this trap works is that there is a small thimble of seed at the bottom, and when the sparrow lands on the triangle-shaped perch, the bird's weight triggers the trap door to close. A nice little set-up.

OK. Neat gizmo, but why would you want to trap sparrows? Not much meat on 'em...
Sparrows are trapped out of warehouses. Also fed to hawks and snakes. In Europe wild birds are often sold as songbirds. I used to trap sparrows as a kid with a different rig and they are commonly used to flavor couscous tagines.
Protected species - do not eat.
Nope, House Sparrows (aka English sparrow), common Pigeons, and common Starlings are not protected under the MBTA or any other law. Kill as many as you want if they are a pest. Sparrow traps are often set around blue bird houses to cull them out of the area.
