Barney's Owner

This would have been me in 1981. I was going to college and living in Oberlin, Ohio in the big Queen Anne-style house behind me, which backed up to a farm which, in turn backed up to a reservoir and a small bit of forest.

My dog in these days was Barney, another mutt terrier rescued off the streets.  He was a great dog.  I was known as Barney's owner, which tells you quite a lot about the both of us.

Dear Mr. Burns,

I've been reading your blog (and thoroughly enjoying it) since finding it maybe a couple years ago by way of the border collie boards (which I found by way of adopting an exceedingly nice border collie from the Lucas Co, OH dog warden We are in Cincinnati, but, behold the power of the internet...) My son began reading, especially after a few science projects/papers on dog behavior he did in high school. (He was never the kid to build a rocket or anything like that for the science fair. Detailed analyses of canine interactions with toys, yes.) In any event, this post has given me great hope about the outcomes of a liberal arts education. My son will be joining the class of 2017 at Oberlin in the fall. He was tickled to read that you are an Obie. Thank you for your enjoyable writing.

Oberlin is a great school and I learned a lot there. If you come out of Oberlin, and you are doing it right, you are going to value service, integrity and work. It's not a big school or a big town, but there are some big ideas running around, and it was perfect for me.
