How Facebook and Google Can Make You Stupid

If you are a conservative following the current gun debate, you may wonder why the liberal media repeats error and nonsense without much fact checking or introspection.

If you are a liberal following the current gun debate, you may wonder why the conservative media repeats error and nonsense without much fact checking or introspection.

In both cases -- and in so many debates that are ongoing today -- the problem is that our information comes to us filtered; we are seeing what confirms our bias or point of view without challenging it.

Of course, everyone likes their point of view confirmed, same as everybody likes a nice soft couch and a bucket of buttered popcorn.

But like a body at rest, a mind at rest tends to stay at rest and to atrophy.

One reason to put opposing view points (blogs, web sites, writers) into your Google Reader is to make your own point of view sharper, more focused, more fact-based, and less susceptible to myth, ignorance, or facile explanations for otherwise complex phenomenon.

This is so important - and one of my current hobby horses. I've pretty much quit using Google search and use Duck Duck GO for my web searches.

It's just as important as the privacy issue.
